Results / RS600 Winter Championships Grafham Water SC - 13/02/2010

It was the weekend of the Winter Champs for the RS600 fleet, with the prospect of little wind it looked like it was going to be a quite one. However as a few of us turned up at the club on the Saturday morning, we knew straight away this was not going to be the case.
With some new faces and some old and also some old faces who wished they still had their 600 it was set to be a good days racing.
Race one saw James Sainsbury take the first bullet of the day with Peter Nelson 2nd and Ian Marshall coming in 3rd. Race two saw the fleet get away very well, coming to the windward mark Dan Saltmarsh binned it in causing a bit of an obstruction forcing Jason Rickards to sail around him while 2 seconds later there was enough room for the boats behind him to get between Saltmarsh's capsized boat and the mark. James Sainsbury again took the second bullet of the day with Mark Cooper 2nd and Peter Nelson 3rd
Race 3 saw the wind pick up to a force 4 gusting 5 with the fleet slightly depleted and a few of us very very cold and this was going to be an interesting race. The fleet got away well again with Rickards getting the jump on a few boats at the committee boat end; this saw him come out on top at the windward mark and stayed in front for the rest of the race taking his first win in the 600! Sainsbury did well to recover 2nd after being down the fleet for most of the race and Cooper stayed consistent, grabbing a 3rd
After day one of racing and a few good results put in by a few of the sailors the champs was still wide open. On the evening of the first day racing saw the 600 fleet propping up the bar things where getting a bit quiet so then came out the giant jenga with one game lasting nearly an hour and some people almost not being able to reach the top it suddenly got very interesting, with some of the ex uni lads bringing some of there drinking games to the table it got very competitive.
The sun broke on day two and it was a little warmer but with far more less wind
Race 4 saw Rickards get a good start but tacking off to go to the right hand side of the course with a couple of other boats did not pay. The rest of the fleet went left, putting them in front . This race saw Sainsbury take his 3rd bullet of the weekend and a well deserved 2nd place for a newbie Sam Knight with Nelson 3rd. Race 5 saw the wind dropping off all the time and with the wind getting a bit shifty it was going to be interesting but again Sainsbury kept to true form and took his 4 win of the weekend stamping his result as the 2010 RS600 Winter Champion with Nelson coming in 2nd and James Nuttall getting a 3rd the runner up places where very much still open.
The final race got underway with Sainsbury starting even though he didn’t have. I think he was out there to prove a point and with the wind still dropping off the conditions were going to benefit some more than others. This race saw one of the newbies, Sam Knight, come out on top, winning his first race in a 600 which bodes well for the fleet in the future. Also coming in 2nd was Nelson, and 3rd was Cooper, but the highlight of this race was Sainsbury dropping the mainsheet and dunking himself! Sorry James!!
