Trident UK Northern Tour at Notts County SC - 17th and 18th October 2026.
Snakes, Ladders and a Tie-Break at Notts County for the final round of the TridentUK RS400 Northern Tour.
The last event of the RS400 Trident UK Northern Tour was held with 5 teams still in the running to become overall winners.
Day 1 came with a building breeze, sunshine and 19 boats all keen to get going.
Race 1 started with three boats so excited to be there that they decided to start the event with an OCS. That included Hamish Gledhill and Richard Brown (West Riding/Carsington SC), which handed Alastair Rimmer and Ollie Brown (Bassenthwaite SC) their first win after passing Dave Exley and Dee Osmond (Leigh and Lowton SC) on the last run. A good start to the weekend!
After lunch the fleet went back out, Hamish and Richard showed us how it's done with three firsts on the bounce. Behind them it was snakes and ladders. The wind was shifty enough that you could gain five places on one beat and lose them all again on the next, just ask John Tailby.
The leeward gate was narrow, and with gusts sweeping down the lake there was plenty for the spectators ashore to enjoy. It kept the race officer and their team busy too, they did an incredible job all weekend: well organised racing and good mark laying throughout. Thank you.
The most consistent boat in the middle of the fleet was Ben and Zach Williamson (Royal Yorkshire YC), who never finished outside the top six and ended up fourth overall. Keith Escritt and Harry Fox (Yorkshire Dales SC) shook off an OCS in race 1 and kept posting seconds, thirds and fourths to take fifth overall. Further back, the wind played a big part as John Tailby and Raife Piggott (Notts County SC) scored everything from a third to an eight.
Most of the fleet had a result or two they'd rather forget, which was easy to do on Saturday evening with great bar staff, cheap prices and the usual chats and laughs in the bar that night.
Day 2 started lighter but with the breeze building again, with similar shifts to the first day.
In the first race of the day Alastair and Ollie chased Keith and Harry and Caroline Exley and Jonathan Bullen (Leigh and Lowton SC) for the whole race to take the lead and race win in the last few yards. To add insult to injury Caroline and Jonathan were OCS , leaving Dave and Dee in third and Hamish and Richard fourth. It was getting tight at the top with any of Hamish/Richard, Dave/Dee and Alastair/Ollie in contention.
In the next race Alastair and Ollie narrowly lead to the windward mark, overlapped with Hamish and Richard. Dave and Dee were right on Hamish's tail. Hamish/Richard and Dave/Dee gybed off, and Dave and Dee, in true to Exley style, found their own band of pressure and sailed off into the distance to win.
That meant it went right down to the wire, with any of the top three able to win overall. It shows how close racing in the 400 fleet is. Unfortunately, Alastair and Ollie had a nightmare start and watched the battle from the middle of the fleet, finishing sixth. Dave and Dee took the race, but from where I was it looked remarkably close, with the two boats crossing the line within a second of each other. That left Hamish and Richard and Dave and Dee tied on 8 points, with Hamish and Richard taking the overall win on countback. Alistair and Ollie were a point behind in third
