Results / RS600 GUL GP Highcliffe SC - 11/06/2011
On arriving at Highcliffe Sailing Club we were greeted by the news that the wind was gusting 3-10 knots and numbers looked thin on the ground. Luckily more boats arrived and brought some breeze with them.
Sailing out to the start line it was clear that the day was going to be very testing for the sailors and their boats with a stiff breeze and formidable waves rolling down the course. Unfortunately for myself, Tom Gall and a 700 sailor the boats seemed to be the first weak link as we spent the first race battling the waves in an attempt to fix various breakages.
I am reliably informed that in race 1 Jamie Mawson blasted off the pin end sailing low and fast, tacked into a clear lane before tacking cleanly for the top mark. Richard Boughton followed and was 4th as he tacked for the windward Mark. However Chris Tubroon (formerly Tilbrook) and Peter Noble stalled on their tacks for the top mark allowing Richard through into second. The positions remained set from there as Jamie went on to build a strong lead followed by Richard in 2nd and Peter in 3rd.
The second race eventually got underway, with Tom and I back after some bodging. The pin end seemed to be the favorite again however the fleet split on which take to cross the line on. Myself, Chris and others went for the port tack flyer whilst Jamie led the charge on starboard. It seemed much of a muchness by the top mark with Jamie rounding in first after sailing a very quick beat. Places swapped numerous times as everyone battled with tacking, gybing and the double beat-away at the top mark, in the challenging conditions. Jamie again 1st followed by Chris and Peter.
In the start of the 3rd race much of the fleet started committee boat end, With Jamie going low for speed and Richard holding a high lane both of which proved effective as they rounded the top mark 1st and 2nd. The last race proved the be the hardest as everyone was feeling the strain of a long day on the water and lots of waiting around. Jamie finished the Saturday off with three bullets, Richard grabbing another 2nd and Chris another 4th to finish in 3rd.
Unfortunately Sunday's viscous forecast of big winds and heavy showers came true, with racing called off it was just down to getting soaked packing away and hoping for more luck with Lymington in July. Thank you to all Highcliffe for hosting a challenging open meeting.
