RS600 Racing Circuit Event

Weston SC

15th –16th August 2009

Saturday was a dull day, overcast, with 15 knots from the SW, gust to 20 knots.

Race 1

The Race Officer laid a good trapezoid course with an extra windward mark to assist in separating the Vareo’s from the 600’s. Yours truly, Jon Powell, led round the first mark with Ian Marshall in second, who nearly forgot the extra mark, followed by James Sainsbury and Fred Merchant. On the second beat James took over the lead, Fred moved into second with Ian third and Jon Bradbury fourth, which is how they finished.

Race 2

Ian and James had a Battle Royal from the off. The lead changing constantly until James come out on top by the finish. Jon Bradbury was third and Fred fourth.

Race 3

Prior to the start Ian thought he had spotted a Port Bias to the line, but by the time the gun sounded it had disappeared and he had to duck the whole fleet who came across on starboard. James was also down the pan following a capsize moments before the start. Ian stood on to the right and when he tacked he found that he was on a huge lift and crossed everyone to round in the lead and was never challenged. Fred came home in second with Jon third and James fourth.

Sunday opened to sunshine, sparkling water and a light force 2-3 which proved to be very variable, and an addition to the fleet for the day by Carl Mayhew arriving.

Race 4

The fleet got away cleanly with Ian leading again. However in the variable wind, the previous days foursome swapped places many times until James came out on top, Jon second, Fred third and Ian a lowly fourth.

Race 5

This time there was a definite port bias to the line and half the fleet tried a flier. However a couple were a little keen and had to return a re-start. James was not one of them and stormed away into a lead that was never challenged, finishing a whole leg before Ian, James Nuttall and Carl. Fred having broken his halyard after the first mark, and Jon dropping to sixth.

Race 6

Everyone was too keen to get a good start and many were over the line, resulting in a general recall. At the re-start Ian pulled out a lead thanks to reading the wind shifts correctly and held the lead to the finish. James S coming second, Jon third and Fred, with a droopy sail tied up with the remains of his halyard, fourth.

Our congratulations to Alan Goule on his recent 60th Birthday, nice to see the class can be sailed by all ages.
