Results / GUL Grand Prix Northampton SC - 19/06/2010

Nine of us arrived at Northampton Sailing Club, along with a similar number of Vareos and a LOT of Fevas.  We were greeted with reasonable weather, but quite a strong and very gusty breeze.

We went afloat and race 1 got underway with a heavy port bias.  The fleet split with some following Chunky (local boat) up the left hand side of the course and some following Pete (local boat) up the right hand side of the course.  With an extremely shifty breeze (90% not uncommon), 'tea-bagging'/dunkings were rife, capsizes to windward weren't uncommon, lucky shifts were everywhere, and inevitably place changes were regular.  In the end Chunky (Anthony York) came in first, with James Sainsbury second, and Pete Nelson third.

This theme continued for much of the day (and weekend), with James winning race 2, Chunky second and Guy Lonsdale third.  Race three saw a familiar three at the top of the fleet (Chunky first, James second, and Pete third), and unfortunately a breaking of the shroud for Sam causing his mast to come down and having to retire.  Race four again saw the same three at the front coming in in a slightly re-shuffled order with Chunky first, Pete second, and James third.  The race also saw the first instance of toys being thrown out of the pram with Mark retiring.

With day 1 coming to a close, most retired to the club house to enjoy a few beers and a lot of great food.

Day 2 greeted us with better weather, but a similar wind direction as day 1 although with slightly less of it, so we all knew it was going to be a similar affair of flukey wind shifting all over the place.  Race 5 got underway on time, with a different face flying out of the starting blocks (Richard Broughton) who unfortunately for him couldn't quite keep it together so let the same three through - Chunky first, Pete second, and James third.  Unfortunately after borrowing a set of shrouds, Sam had another similar issue, this time with his D ring pulling out of the deck causing his mast to come down and his event to be over.

Finally, race 6 got underway.  With Chunky on the shore as he had already won the event and with the second instance of toys being thrown out of the pram causing James to retire, it allowed different boats at the front, which resulted in Pete coming on first, Mark second, and Alan third.

Generally, the event consisted of some very close racing, some of the closest there has been with many place changes in difficult conditions.  Chunky won the event overall, Pete was second on count back, and James was third.  Thanks must go to all those involved from Northampton Sailing Club for hosting the event.
