A great turnout of 27 boats here at the Royal Torbay YC.

Day 1 lived up to the forecast of lightish patchy easterlies, which combined with a huge swell made sailing a 600 hard on the knees and even harder on the brain. Winning moves came from both sides of the course up and downwind, with incredibly close racing and places changing ftom top to bottom of the fleet on every leg.
Race 1 saw Peter Nelson score the win ahead of James Mawson, with James Sainsbury moving steadily up through the fleet to take third. Race 2 was won by Giles Chipperfield, with Mawson again second and Ifan James third.
Three races are scheduled for tomorrow, with a forecast of rain and less wind. Welcome to the English Riviera, but it's been great racing so far.

Day 3
With the championship wide open, the fleet's enthusiasm was very literally dampened by torrential rain and a surprise first outing for warm winter sailing gear. However, the Easterly wind was still with us and two solid races were held in a rapidly increasing breeze before PRO Peter Rumbelow made the excellent decision to postpone the third for more promising conditions on Tuesday. He was proved absolutely spot on as the predicted weather front came blasting through and the cream of the RS600 fleet made a complete spectacle of themselves trying to short tack through the marina to the slipway, some with more success than others.

In the racing James Mawson put on a great display with two bullets, with Paul Proctor showing excellent upwind speed and technique for a second and a third place as the wind increased. James Sainsbury got over his new habit of capsizing just before each start gun, and also scored a second place with some astonishing downwind pace. Richard Broughton and Chris Tillbrook reached the front of the fleet in the more solid wind, making 13 of the 27 entries who had now had a top 5 finish, and some very close points battles throughout the results. The overnight standings had James Mawson just three points clear of Paul Proctor and Giles Chipperfield, who were tied on points and wondering what meteorological excesses the final day would bring.

Day 4
The last day dawned sunny and breezy: champagne sailing at last. PRO Peter Rumbelow once again put on his immaculate organisation and perfect race management, with two fantastic races held in the bay. Considerable variations in pressure and direction across the course made tactical brains ache once again, to add to the physical endurance ordeal that was four days of flat out close racing in a 600.

The first race saw several changes of lead on the beat as the shifts told, but in the end James Mawson lead round the mark and was then not headed before the finish, although chased close behind all the way by James Sainbury and Giles Chipperfield. In the final race, James Mawson was again just ahead at the first mark and won the race and with it, finally, the championship. Giles Chipperfield was just behind until he put in a proper RS600 flying capsize on the top reach, and Mark Cooper then put in a great race to take second place. Ken Potts made a championship best fourth place, just pipped by Paul Proctor at the last mark.

This left James Mawson a very well-deserved RS600 National Champion 2010, with Giles Chipperfield taking second from Paul Proctor on countback. Dan Saltmarsh was first Youth, Giles Chipperfield first Master and Mark Cooper won the Silver Fleet. Close racing, and lots of it, with excellent race management and a really hospitable Royal Torbay YC made for a top event. Many thanks to all those who helped put together a thoroughly enjoyable championships.
