RS600 Fat Face Circuit Filey Sailing Club 16-17th July 2005
The 6th RS600 Fat Face Circuit Event was held at Filey Sailing Club
combined with their annual Filey Regatta. The weekend had glorious sunny
weather both days with Force 2-3 winds on Saturday picking up to Force 4
Sunday afternoon once the see breeze had kicked in.
Filey has a large enclosed bay, which gives excellent sailing
conditions. The regatta had a good turnout with approx 130 boats on 2
courses, a P course and Windward Leeward. There were fleets of
Enterprises, Scorpions, National 12, Phantoms, RS200, Lasers all with
their own class starts and a general handicap fleet on both courses. The
evening BBQ was superb with cheep beer, lots of fun had by all. Having
close by camping facilities allowed us to enjoy the evening without any
thought of having to travel to accommodation.
The RS600 sailed on the P course with 4 races 3 to count. Unfortunately
we only had 4 boats turn out but this was not all bad because we raced in
with the general handicap fleet of 33 boats (we needed 6 boats for our
own start). This made starting interesting as the race officer liked to
set port biased lines.
Within the RS600s Race 1 saw Ian Marshall get a good start on Port
followed by Dave Nunn also managing to start on port. As the race
progressed Ian extended his lead and Jamie Mawson caught up with Dave.
Jamie and Dave were neck and neck the rest of the race with Dave going
onto get second. Richard Gaunt had dropped back far enough to be
finished a lap early and on average lap times combined with the breeze
dropping off Richard received a 10th place overall with Ian getting a
19th.
Race 2 saw Dave going for a brave port hand flyer only to back out at the
last second or two with Jamie and Ian getting the best starts. Jamie
lead right up to the last mark until Ian overtook him on the short beat
to the finish by using the left hand side of the course.
Race 3 was on the Sunday, delayed until the afternoon once the sea breeze
kicked in. Jamie made the best start followed by Ian then Dave. The
Breeze was good until Jamie approached the bottom of the P course and
sailed into a big hole, joining the rest of the parked up boats. This
allowed Ian and Dave to catch up. Ian and Dave getting the wind first
went on to get 1st and 2nd, Ians 3rd bullet of the weekend.
Race 4 started in a nice Force 4 wind with Jamie getting the best start
closely followed by Dave, Ian after a poor start sailed will be catch and
overtake Dave but Jamie extended his lead. Ian retired at this point
knowing he had 3 winds to count. This race did however make Jamie and
Daves weekend as we received 1st and 2nd place overall in the handicap
fleet.
Thanks must go to Filey Sailing club for a great regatta and a superb
BBQ. Hopefully next year we will get enough boats for our own start.
