The RS600 Gul winter Championship, on 18th and 19th February, saw a
reasonable turn out of 13 boats, considering the Force zero forecast and
seasonal temperatures. Forecasts must be getting better as the wind on
the first day was almost exactly that. RS300 and sometime RS600 sailor
Phil Underwood rigged a 600 sail onto a 300 and crept across the water.
It was not clear whether he or a conventionally rigged 300 were faster.
The remaining sailors spent the day bumbling on their boats.
Sunday dawned with some wind and about 100m visibility. The Race Officer
went ahead and started at 10:30, and miraculously, the fog lifted enough
to see the first mark. The wind stayed running directly down the
reservoir, in front of the clubhouse. A zig-zag downwind route around the
club buoys was used, giving a variety of runs and reaches. "Chunky"
Anthony York led the first race, and whilst not as far ahead as the
series of bullets suggest, never looked likely to be troubled for the
overall first place. Jamie Mawson and Andy Hessig had a close duel for
second, with Jamie coming out ahead on count-back. By the end of the day,
the wind had piped up to a force 4, with at least the lighter helms de-
powering. With 4 races on the Sunday, and the cold conditions, tiredness
also started to lead to some more retirements and capsizes. Nevertheless,
the racing was excellent, and thanks to the committee and support boats
crews who looked frozen.
