Fat Face Racing Circuit - RS600 - Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club 23/24 March 2002 A fleet of 17 600s competed in the Chew Valley LSC open. The racing was close with fluky conditions on both days with large holes in the breeze to catch the unwary or the plain unlucky. Race 1 got underway after the course had been re-laid following a large wind shift. Brian Greensmith found good boat speed and, once he realised where the windward mark was, showed a cool head to avoid the holes and win the 1st race of the day with Peter Sanders in 2nd and Matt Chapman in 3rd. Race 2 Greensmith came out on top again in the windiest race of the day with Sanders once more in 2nd and Matt Humphreys in 3rd. Race 3 Roland Emmans led initially, with Chapman in close pursuit along with Greensmith and Sanders. Chapman took the lead when Emmans found a hole near the windward mark and sat in the bottom of his boat and watched half the fleet sail past him! Chapman held on to win with Sanders very consistent in 2nd yet again. Humphreys rolled Nick Lowe on the last reach to the finish to take 3rd. The second day saw an increase in the breeze initially which then died as the day progressed, still full of holes and shifts. Race 4 Greensmith took an early lead and led for all 5 laps until 100m from the finish Humphreys found a gust and trapeezed past him to take 1st with Greensmith 2nd and Chapman in 3rd. Race 5 Emmans provided entertainment by forgetting that it is necessary to un-hook and change sides in order to tack and promptly capsizing to windward. Greensmith reassumed his usual spot at the front of the fleet taking his third bullet with Ian Marshall in 2nd and Humphreys in 3rd. Race 5 A very fluky race in a fickle breeze was initially led by Chapman who built up a huge lead. This was to no avail as to his disbelief Lowe reeled him in and passed him to a well-deserved win. Chapman held on to 2nd and Dave Nunn showing storming boat speed and a cool head to avoid the holes and take 3rd. Overall, Brian Greensmith won with 9pts, Pete Sanders was 2nd with 14pts and Chapman was 3rd with 15pts.
