Results / Fat Face Racing Circuit Weston SC - 14/07/2007

After the recent strong winds on the south coast it was a pleasant surprise to see 18 RS600s turn up for the Fat Face circuit event at Weston Sailing Club on 14/15 July.

The fleet was greeted with sun and a perfect Westerly force 3-4 for race 1. With a pin bias Ian Marshall led from the start to win with James Sainsbury 2nd and Olly Straker 3rd

In race 2 newcomer Nick Farrer was the only one to notice the wind shift before the start and promptly port tacked all off the line. By the top mark he had been overhauled by Jamie Mawson. The consisentcy of Marshall eventually shone through though and he took another bullet with Straker 3rd.

Race 3 had similar conditions and Straker showed the fleet a hot pair of heels taking the bullet ahead of Marshall, with Olly Ponsford showing good upwind speed to take 3rd.

With the fleet finishing at about 1500 there was time on land for the sailing club bar to begin work. This ensued throughout the night, also including a wonderful barbeque.

Sunday morning looked a little lighter pre-launching but once out on the race course a  South-Easterly force 3 gave the fleet another 3 great races.

Mawson showed great speed in race 4 to take the bullet ahead of Straker and Marshall.

In Race 5 Olly Ponsford showed fantastic speed upwind and led until and unfortunate capsize downwind. This meant the usual suspects took the top three in the order of Straker, Marshall, Mawson. Jon Charles showed good speed again to take 4th.

Race 6 had a pin end bias and Olly Straker decided that local knowledge meant he could port tack the fleet. Unfortunatly for him Jon Charles was on starboard at this end and a messy tangle entailed. Nick Farrer took advantage of this and rolled over them. By the top mark Ian Marshall had sailed sensibly to lead at the top mark, followed by Mark Duckworth and Farrer. A left hand shift on the run helped Jamie to catch the leaders and by the leeward mark Ian had got a good lead with a group of 5 boats in close proximity. It was here that a 30 knot squall blew through and this meant that Marshall won with Mawson 2nd and Farrer 3rd.

This gave Ian Marshall the event, with Straker 2nd and Mawson 3rd.

Many thanks to Weston SC for providing wonderful hospitality and great courses for racing. All RS600 sailors are now invited to the next event, the national championships at Royal Torbay from 6-9th September.
